What it is

Saimet is a brand of metformin hydrochloride, which belongs to a class of medicines called biguanides. It works by helping the body use insulin better and lowering the amount of sugar produced by the liver. It is used along with diet and exercise to control blood sugar in type 2 diabetes.

What it's used for

Saimet (metformin hydrochloride) is used as an addition to diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adults and children aged 10 years and older who have type 2 diabetes mellitus.

How it's taken

Saimet 500 mg tablets are taken by mouth, usually with meals to reduce stomach upset. The typical starting dose for adults is one 500 mg tablet twice a day, or one 850 mg tablet once a day. The dose may be increased gradually by a doctor based on blood sugar levels. For children aged 10 years and older, the usual starting dose is one 500 mg tablet twice a day. Always follow your doctor's instructions.

Common side effects

The most common side effects of metformin include diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, gas, indigestion, stomach discomfort, weakness, and headache. Metformin can also cause a serious but rare condition called lactic acidosis. It may lower vitamin B12 levels over time, so your doctor may check your blood regularly. Tell your doctor if you experience any severe or persistent side effects.

Important cautions

Do not take Saimet if you have severe kidney disease (eGFR below 30), are allergic to metformin, or have metabolic acidosis including diabetic ketoacidosis. Metformin can increase the risk of lactic acidosis, especially in people with kidney problems, liver disease, alcohol use, or during serious illness. It may also cause low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) when used with insulin or other diabetes medicines. If you have any of these conditions or take other diabetes drugs, talk to your doctor before using Saimet.
