What it's used for

How it's taken
For metformin hydrochloride tablets, the typical starting dose in adults is 500 mg twice daily or 850 mg once daily, taken with meals. The dose may be increased gradually up to a maximum of 2550 mg per day, divided into doses. For children 10 years and older, the typical starting dose is 500 mg twice daily. Common side effects
Common side effects (occurring in more than 5% of users) include diarrhea, nausea or vomiting, gas (flatulence), weakness (asthenia), indigestion, abdominal discomfort, and headache.
Important cautions
Betaform SR should not be used in people with severe kidney disease (eGFR below 30), allergies to metformin, or metabolic acidosis including diabetic ketoacidosis. It can rarely cause lactic acidosis, lower vitamin B12 levels over time, and increase the risk of hypoglycemia when taken with insulin or certain diabetes medicines. Routine blood tests are recommended.
