What it is

Formedab is used alongside a healthy diet and regular exercise to improve blood sugar control in adults and children aged 10 years and older who have type 2 diabetes mellitus. It is not a cure but a management tool for the condition.

How it's taken

Formedab is taken by mouth as a tablet. The dosage is individualised and determined by your doctor based on your blood sugar levels and medical condition. It is typically taken with meals to reduce the chance of stomach upset. Your doctor will start you on a low dose and may increase it gradually. Common side effects

The most common side effects include diarrhoea, nausea or vomiting, gas (flatulence), weakness (asthenia), indigestion, abdominal discomfort, and headache. These often improve over time. Tell your doctor if they persist or become severe.

Important cautions

Formedab should not be used in people with severe kidney disease (eGFR below 30), those who are allergic to metformin, or those with metabolic acidosis (including diabetic ketoacidosis). A rare but serious side effect is lactic acidosis, which requires immediate medical attention. Metformin can also lower vitamin B12 levels, so your doctor may check your blood regularly. When used with insulin or medicines that release insulin, there is an increased risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia).
