What it is

Hegluphage is a brand of metformin hydrochloride. Metformin belongs to a class of drugs called biguanides, which help lower blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes.

What it's used for

Hegluphage is prescribed along with diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adults and children aged 10 years and older with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

How it's taken

The typical starting dose for adults is 500 mg twice a day with meals, or 850 mg once a day. The dose may be gradually increased to a maximum of 2550 mg per day, taken in divided doses. For children 10 years and older, the starting dose is usually 500 mg twice a day with meals. Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor or pharmacist advises.

Common side effects

The most common side effects (affecting more than 5% of people) include diarrhea, nausea or vomiting, gas, weakness, indigestion, stomach discomfort, and headache. Serious side effects such as lactic acidosis are rare but require immediate medical attention.

Important cautions

Do not take Hegluphage if you have severe kidney impairment (eGFR below 30), are allergic to metformin, or have metabolic acidosis (including diabetic ketoacidosis). Metformin may lower vitamin B12 levels over time, so your doctor may check your B12 levels periodically. When used with insulin or medicines that increase insulin release, there is a higher risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia).
