What it is

Bleorformin is a brand of metformin hydrochloride, which belongs to a class of medicines called biguanides. It works by helping to lower blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes.

What it's used for

Bleorformin is used as an addition to diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adults and children aged 10 years and older who have type 2 diabetes mellitus.

How it's taken

Bleorformin tablets are taken by mouth with meals. The usual starting dose for adults is 500 mg twice daily or 850 mg once daily. The dose may be increased slowly based on blood sugar levels, up to a maximum of 2550 mg per day. Doses above 2000 mg may be better tolerated if taken three times daily with meals. For children, the starting dose is typically 500 mg twice daily with meals. Always follow your doctor’s instructions exactly.

Common side effects

The most common side effects of Bleorformin (occurring in more than 5% of users) include diarrhea, nausea or vomiting, gas, weakness, indigestion, stomach discomfort, and headache.

Important cautions

Bleorformin can cause a rare but serious condition called lactic acidosis, especially in people with severe kidney problems. It is not recommended if your estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) is below 30 mL/min. It may also lower vitamin B12 levels over time; regular blood tests are advised. When used together with insulin or medicines that increase insulin release, there is a higher risk of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). Avoid using Bleorformin if you are allergic to metformin or have metabolic acidosis including diabetic ketoacidosis.
