What it is

Glucoform is a brand of metformin hydrochloride, a medicine in the biguanide class. It works by helping the body respond better to insulin and reducing the amount of sugar the liver makes. It is used alongside diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adults and children aged 10 years and older with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

What it's used for

Glucoform is used to improve glycemic control (blood sugar levels) in people with type 2 diabetes. It is meant to be used together with a healthy diet and regular physical activity. It can be used in adults and children 10 years of age and older.

How it's taken

Glucoform should be taken with meals to reduce stomach upset. The typical starting dose for adults is 500 mg twice daily or 850 mg once daily. Your doctor may increase the dose gradually based on your blood sugar levels. The maximum daily dose is usually 2550 mg, taken in divided doses. For children 10 years and older, the starting dose is 500 mg twice daily. Always follow your doctor's instructions.

Common side effects

The most common side effects of Glucoform include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, gas (flatulence), weakness, indigestion, stomach discomfort, and headache. These often improve over time. Serious side effects can include lactic acidosis (a buildup of lactic acid in the blood), which is rare but can be life-threatening. Metformin may also lower vitamin B12 levels over time, and when used with insulin or certain diabetes medicines, it can cause low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). Contact your doctor if you experience unusual symptoms.

Important cautions

Do not use Glucoform if you have severe kidney disease (with eGFR below 30), if you are allergic to metformin, or if you have a condition called metabolic acidosis (including diabetic ketoacidosis). Glucoform carries a boxed warning about the risk of lactic acidosis, especially if you have kidney problems. Your doctor will check your kidney function before and during treatment. Tell your doctor about all other medicines you take, especially insulin or other diabetes drugs that can lower blood sugar.
