What it is

Dealformin contains metformin hydrochloride, a biguanide medicine that helps lower blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes.

What it's used for

It is used as an addition to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults and children aged 10 years and older who have type 2 diabetes mellitus.

How it's taken

Dealformin tablets are taken by mouth, typically with meals to reduce stomach upset. Doses are usually started low and increased gradually. A doctor or pharmacist will determine the right dose for each person.

Common side effects

The most common side effects (occurring in more than 5% of users) include diarrhea, nausea or vomiting, gas, weakness, indigestion, abdominal discomfort, and headache. Serious side effects like lactic acidosis (a buildup of acid in the blood) are rare but require immediate medical attention.

Important cautions

Dealformin should not be used in people with severe kidney disease (eGFR below 30), a history of metabolic acidosis (including diabetic ketoacidosis), or allergy to metformin. It can lower vitamin B12 levels over time and may cause low blood sugar when taken with insulin or other diabetes medicines. Regular monitoring by a healthcare professional is necessary.
