Important cautions

Metformin can rarely cause a serious condition called lactic acidosis, especially in people with severe kidney problems. It may also lower vitamin B12 levels over time. When taken with insulin or certain diabetes pills, there is an increased risk of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). Do not use it if you have severe kidney disease, are allergic to metformin, or have metabolic acidosis such as diabetic ketoacidosis.
