Emzophage: A Brand of Metformin for Type 2 Diabetes

What it is

Emzophage is a brand of metformin hydrochloride, a medicine in a class called biguanides. It helps lower blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes.

What it's used for

Emzophage (metformin) is used together with diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adults and children aged 10 years and older who have type 2 diabetes.

How it's taken

Emzophage tablets are taken by mouth with meals to reduce stomach upset. The typical starting dose for adults is 500 mg twice a day or 850 mg once a day. The dose may be increased gradually based on blood sugar levels, up to a maximum of 2550 mg per day in divided doses. For doses above 2000 mg daily, taking them three times a day with meals may be better tolerated. For children 10 years and older, the typical starting dose is 500 mg twice a day with meals. Always follow your doctor's or pharmacist's instructions exactly.

Common side effects

The most common side effects (occurring in more than 5% of users) include diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, gas, weakness, indigestion, abdominal discomfort, and headache. Metformin can also rarely cause a serious condition called lactic acidosis. It may lower vitamin B12 levels over time.

Important cautions

Do not take Emzophage if you have severe kidney disease (eGFR below 30), are allergic to metformin, or have metabolic acidosis such as diabetic ketoacidosis. Metformin can cause a rare but serious side effect called lactic acidosis — get emergency help if you experience muscle pain, trouble breathing, stomach pain, dizziness, or feeling very weak or cold. Metformin may lower vitamin B12 levels, so your doctor should check your blood regularly and monitor B12 every 2 to 3 years. When used with insulin or medicines that increase insulin, there is an increased risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia); your doctor may adjust the doses.
