What it is

Glylow is a brand of metformin, a type of medicine called a biguanide that helps lower blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes.

What it's used for

Glylow (metformin) is used along with diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adults and children aged 10 years and older with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

How it's taken

Metformin tablets are taken by mouth with meals to reduce stomach upset. The typical starting dose for adults is 500 mg twice a day or 850 mg once a day. Your doctor may adjust the dose gradually up to a maximum of 2550 mg per day. For children 10 years and older, the typical starting dose is 500 mg twice a day. Always take exactly as your doctor prescribes.

Common side effects

The most common side effects (occurring in more than 5% of users) include diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, gas, weakness, indigestion, stomach discomfort, and headache. A rare but serious side effect called lactic acidosis can occur—seek immediate medical help if you have unusual muscle pain, trouble breathing, or unusual sleepiness.

Important cautions

Do not use Glylow if you have severe kidney problems, metabolic acidosis (including diabetic ketoacidosis), or are allergic to metformin. This medicine may lower vitamin B12 levels over time, so your doctor may check your blood yearly. Taking metformin with insulin or certain diabetes pills increases your risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia). Tell your doctor about all your medical conditions and medicines.
