What it is

Chanformin contains metformin hydrochloride, a medicine from the biguanide class. It works by helping the body use insulin better and reducing the amount of sugar the liver makes.

What it's used for

Chanformin is used to improve glycemic control in adults and pediatric patients 10 years of age and older with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It is prescribed as an addition to diet and exercise.

How it's taken

Chanformin is taken orally with meals. The starting dose is typically 500 mg twice a day, but the dose may be adjusted by a doctor based on individual needs. Always follow your healthcare provider's instructions.

Common side effects

The most common side effects (occurring in more than 5% of users) include diarrhea, nausea or vomiting, flatulence (gas), asthenia (weakness), indigestion, abdominal discomfort, and headache.

Important cautions

Chanformin is not for people with severe kidney disease (eGFR below 30), hypersensitivity to metformin, or acute/chronic metabolic acidosis including diabetic ketoacidosis. There is a rare but serious risk of lactic acidosis. Metformin may lower vitamin B12 levels, so periodic blood checks are recommended. When used with insulin or other blood sugar-lowering medicines, there is an increased risk of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar).
