Pivox (Metformin) 500 mg Tablets – What You Need to Know

What it is

Pivox is a brand of metformin hydrochloride, a medicine belonging to a class called biguanides. It helps lower blood sugar levels by improving how the body uses insulin. It comes as 500 mg tablets and is registered with NAFDAC under number B4-9997.

What it's used for

Pivox is used together with diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adults and children aged 10 years and older who have type 2 diabetes. It is not a cure for diabetes but helps manage the condition.

How it's taken

Pivox tablets are taken by mouth with meals to reduce stomach upset. The starting dose for adults is typically 500 mg twice a day or 850 mg once a day with food. The dose may be increased slowly, up to a maximum of 2550 mg per day in divided doses. For children (10 years and older), the usual starting dose is 500 mg twice a day with meals. Always follow your doctor’s or pharmacist’s instructions on dosing.

Common side effects

The most common side effects (affecting more than 5% of users) include diarrhoea, nausea or vomiting, gas, weakness, indigestion, stomach discomfort, and headache. These often improve with time. Tell your doctor if any side effect bothers you.

Important cautions

Pivox should not be used if you have severe kidney problems (eGFR below 30), if you are allergic to metformin, or if you have a condition called metabolic acidosis (including diabetic ketoacidosis). This medicine can rarely cause a serious condition called lactic acidosis – get emergency help if you feel very weak, have muscle pain, trouble breathing, or unusual sleepiness. Metformin may lower vitamin B12 levels over time; your doctor should check your blood yearly and test B12 every 2–3 years. When taken with insulin or certain diabetes pills, the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia) increases – your doctor may adjust those medicines. Always tell your healthcare provider about all medicines you take.
