What it is

Glyformin is a brand of metformin hydrochloride, which belongs to a class of medicines called biguanides. It helps lower blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes.

What it's used for

Glyformin (metformin hydrochloride) is used as an addition to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults and children 10 years and older with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

How it's taken

For adults, the typical starting dose is 500 mg taken twice a day with meals, or 850 mg once a day. The dose may be increased gradually up to a maximum of 2550 mg per day, divided into two or three doses. For children aged 10 and older, the starting dose is 500 mg twice daily with meals. Always follow your doctor’s specific instructions and do not change your dose without medical advice.

Common side effects

The most common side effects (occurring in more than 5% of users) include diarrhea, nausea/vomiting, flatulence, weakness (asthenia), indigestion, abdominal discomfort, and headache. These often improve as the body adjusts to the medicine.

Important cautions

Glyformin should not be used by people with severe kidney problems (eGFR below 30), a history of allergic reaction to metformin, or metabolic acidosis including diabetic ketoacidosis. There is a risk of a rare but serious condition called lactic acidosis, so caution is needed in people with kidney or liver issues, or those who drink large amounts of alcohol. Metformin may lower vitamin B12 levels over time; your doctor may check your blood regularly. When used together with insulin or medicines that increase insulin release, there is a higher chance of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia).
