What it is

Metfosyn is a brand containing the active ingredient metformin hydrochloride. Metformin belongs to a class of medicines called biguanides. It works by helping the body use insulin more effectively and reducing the amount of sugar made by the liver.

What it's used for

Metfosyn (metformin hydrochloride) is used together with diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adults and children aged 10 years and older who have type 2 diabetes mellitus.

How it's taken

Metfosyn is taken by mouth as a tablet. Dosing is individualised and must be directed by a doctor. Typically, treatment starts at a low dose taken with meals to reduce stomach upset. Common side effects

The most common side effects reported with metformin hydrochloride tablets include diarrhoea, nausea or vomiting, flatulence (gas), asthenia (weakness or lack of energy), indigestion, abdominal discomfort, and headache.

Important cautions

Metformin can cause a rare but serious condition called lactic acidosis (a build-up of acid in the blood). Do not use this medicine if you have severe kidney disease (eGFR below 30 mL/min/1.73 m²), are allergic to metformin, or have metabolic acidosis including diabetic ketoacidosis. Long-term use may lower vitamin B12 levels, so your doctor may check your blood. Using metformin with insulin or medicines that increase insulin release can raise the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia).
