What it is

Degluco is a brand of metformin hydrochloride, a biguanide medicine that helps lower blood sugar levels. It is available as 1000 mg tablets and is registered with NAFDAC under number B4-9453.

What it's used for

Degluco is used along with diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adults and children aged 10 years and older who have type 2 diabetes mellitus.

How it's taken

Degluco tablets are taken by mouth with meals. The typical starting dose in adults is 500 mg twice a day or 850 mg once a day. The dose may be increased gradually up to a maximum of 2550 mg per day, divided into two or three doses. For children, the starting dose is usually 500 mg twice a day with meals. Your doctor or pharmacist will determine the right dose for you.

Common side effects

The most common side effects of Degluco include diarrhoea, nausea or vomiting, flatulence, weakness, indigestion, abdominal discomfort, and headache.

Important cautions

Degluco should not be used in people with severe kidney disease (eGFR below 30 mL/min), a history of allergic reaction to metformin, or metabolic acidosis including diabetic ketoacidosis. It may rarely cause a serious condition called lactic acidosis. Metformin can lower vitamin B12 levels, so your doctor may check your blood levels periodically. When used with insulin or certain other diabetes medicines, there is a higher risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia).
