What it is

Bariphage is a brand of metformin hydrochloride. Metformin belongs to a class of medicines called biguanides, which help lower blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes.

What it's used for

Bariphage is used alongside diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adults and children aged 10 years and older with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

How it's taken

Bariphage tablets are taken by mouth, typically with meals to reduce stomach upset. The usual starting dose for adults is 500 mg twice daily or 850 mg once daily. The dose may be increased gradually based on blood sugar levels, up to a maximum of 2550 mg per day. For children, the starting dose is usually 500 mg twice daily. Always follow your doctor's instructions on how to take this medicine.

Common side effects

The most common side effects (occurring in more than 5% of people) include diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, flatulence, weakness, indigestion, stomach discomfort, and headache.

Important cautions

Bariphage should not be used in people with severe kidney disease (eGFR below 30), those who are allergic to metformin, or those with metabolic acidosis (including diabetic ketoacidosis). A rare but serious side effect is lactic acidosis. Metformin may also lower vitamin B12 levels, so regular blood checks are recommended.
