What it's used for

Juformin (metformin hydrochloride) is used as an addition to diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adults and children aged 10 years and older with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

How it's taken

Juformin tablets are typically taken with meals to reduce stomach upset. The usual starting dose is 500 mg twice a day or 850 mg once a day. Your doctor may gradually increase your dose depending on your blood sugar levels. Always follow your healthcare provider’s instructions exactly.

Common side effects

The most common side effects (occurring in more than 5% of users) include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, gas, weakness, indigestion, stomach discomfort, and headache. Metformin can also cause a rare but serious condition called lactic acidosis and may lower vitamin B12 levels over time.

Important cautions

Juformin should not be used by people with severe kidney disease (eGFR below 30), a history of metabolic acidosis (including diabetic ketoacidosis), or an allergy to metformin. When combined with insulin or certain diabetes pills, there is an increased risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). Your doctor may check your vitamin B12 levels every 2-3 years.
