Zuntrim (Sulfamethoxazole + Trimethoprim) Suspension – Informational Guide

What it is

Zuntrim is a brand of sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim combination, also known as co-trimoxazole. It is an antibacterial medicine that works against a wide range of bacteria. Each 5 mL of the suspension contains 200 mg of sulfamethoxazole and 40 mg of trimethoprim. It is registered with NAFDAC under number A11-0990.

What it's used for

Zuntrim is used to treat or prevent infections caused by bacteria that are susceptible to sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim. These include urinary tract infections, shigellosis (a bacterial infection of the intestines), and acute otitis media (middle ear infection) in children. It should only be used when the bacteria are confirmed or strongly suspected to be sensitive to the medicine.

How it's taken

Zuntrim suspension is taken by mouth, usually every 12 hours. The dose depends on the type and severity of the infection, the patient's age, weight, and kidney function. It is important to follow the doctor's prescription exactly. Shake the bottle well before each use. Do not give Zuntrim to infants younger than 2 months of age.

Common side effects

The most common side effects of Zuntrim include nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, and skin rashes or hives. Serious side effects are rare but can include severe allergic reactions, liver damage, and blood disorders. If you notice a severe rash, difficulty breathing, or unusual bruising, seek medical help immediately.

Important cautions

Do not take Zuntrim if you are allergic to sulfonamides or trimethoprim, or if you have a history of drug-induced immune thrombocytopenia with these medicines. It is also contraindicated in people with megaloblastic anemia due to folate deficiency, marked liver damage, or in infants under 2 months. Use during pregnancy may increase the risk of birth defects; tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Always consult a doctor before use.
