What it is

Samtrim is a brand of sulfamethoxazole + trimethoprim, also known as co-trimoxazole. It is a combination antibiotic that belongs to the class of sulfonamides and folate inhibitors. Each tablet contains 400 mg of sulfamethoxazole and 80 mg of trimethoprim. It is registered with NAFDAC under number 04-0277 as a tablet formulation.

What it's used for

Samtrim is used to treat bacterial infections when the bacteria are known or strongly suspected to be susceptible. Common uses include urinary tract infections, shigellosis (a type of severe diarrhea), and acute otitis media (middle ear infection) in children. It works by stopping bacteria from growing.

How it's taken

Samtrim tablets are taken by mouth, typically twice daily. The dose and duration depend on the type and severity of the infection and should be determined by a doctor or pharmacist. It is not recommended for children under 2 months of age. Always follow the prescribed course and do not stop early without medical advice.

Common side effects

The most common side effects include nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, and skin rashes or hives. Rare but serious side effects such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome, blood disorders (e.g., agranulocytosis, aplastic anemia), and severe liver injury have been reported. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience severe skin reaction, unusual bleeding, or jaundice.

Important cautions

Do not take Samtrim if you are allergic to sulfonamides or trimethoprim, have a history of drug-induced immune thrombocytopenia, or have megaloblastic anemia due to folate deficiency. It is also contraindicated in patients with severe liver damage and in infants under 2 months. Use during pregnancy may pose risks to the fetus; consult your doctor if pregnant or planning pregnancy.
