What it is

Coptrine is a brand of sulfamethoxazole + trimethoprim, a combination antibiotic that contains two active ingredients: sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim. It belongs to the class of sulfonamide antibiotics and is used to stop the growth of susceptible bacteria.

What it's used for

Coptrine is used to treat infections that are proven or strongly suspected to be caused by bacteria. These include urinary tract infections, shigellosis (a contagious diarrheal infection), and acute otitis media (middle ear infection) in children. It may also be used for other infections as determined by your doctor.

How it's taken

Coptrine tablets are taken by mouth, typically every 12 hours. The dose and duration depend on the type and severity of the infection, as well as the patient’s age and weight. It is important to complete the full course as prescribed by a doctor or pharmacist. This medicine is not recommended for children under 2 months of age.

Common side effects

The most common side effects include nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, and allergic skin reactions such as rash and hives. Rare but serious side effects can occur, including severe skin reactions (like Stevens-Johnson syndrome), blood disorders, and liver injury. Seek immediate medical attention if you notice a severe rash, yellowing of the skin, unusual bruising, or signs of an allergic reaction.

Important cautions

Do not use Coptrine if you are allergic to sulfonamides or trimethoprim, have a history of drug-induced thrombocytopenia (low platelets) from these medicines, have megaloblastic anemia due to folate deficiency, or have severe liver damage. Pregnant women should discuss risks with their doctor, as the medicine may harm the unborn baby. Always tell your doctor about all other medicines you are taking.
