Orfetrim: A Brand of Sulfamethoxazole + Trimethoprim

What it is

a combination antibiotic that works by stopping the growth of bacteria

What it's used for

It is used to treat bacterial infections, including urinary tract infections (UTIs), shigellosis (a type of diarrhoea), and acute otitis media (ear infection) in children. It should only be used for infections proven or strongly suspected to be caused by susceptible bacteria.

How it's taken

Orfetrim is taken by mouth, usually every 12 hours. The dose and length of treatment depend on the type and severity of the infection. Always follow the dosage instructions given by your doctor or pharmacist.

Common side effects

The most common side effects are stomach upset (nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite) and allergic skin reactions such as rash or hives. Rare but serious side effects may include severe skin reactions, blood disorders, and liver injury. Seek medical attention if you experience any unusual symptoms.

Important cautions

Do not use Orfetrim in infants younger than 2 months, or if you have a known allergy to sulfonamides or trimethoprim, a history of drug-induced low platelets, or megaloblastic anaemia due to folate deficiency. It is also contraindicated in severe liver damage. Use during pregnancy may increase the risk of birth defects; talk to your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Stop use and see a doctor immediately if you develop a rash, mouth sores, or signs of a severe allergic reaction.
