Sfeltrin: A Brand of Sulfamethoxazole + Trimethoprim (Co-trimoxazole)

What it is

Sfeltrin is a brand of a combination antibiotic made up of sulfamethoxazole (a sulfonamide) and trimethoprim (a folate inhibitor). It is used to treat certain bacterial infections.

What it's used for

Sfeltrin is used to treat urinary tract infections, shigellosis (a bacterial gut infection), and acute otitis media (middle ear infection) in children. It should only be used for infections proven or strongly suspected to be caused by susceptible bacteria, based on culture and susceptibility patterns.

How it's taken

Sfeltrin tablets are taken by mouth, typically every 12 hours. The usual adult dose for urinary tract infections is one tablet every 12 hours for 10 to 14 days. The dose for children depends on body weight. Sfeltrin should not be used in infants younger than 2 months of age. Always follow your doctor's dosing instructions exactly.

Common side effects

The most common side effects are nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, and allergic skin reactions such as rash or hives. Rare but serious side effects include severe skin reactions (Stevens-Johnson syndrome), liver damage, and blood problems. Seek medical help if you experience any severe symptoms.

Important cautions

Do not take Sfeltrin if you are allergic to trimethoprim or sulfonamides, or if you have a history of drug-induced low blood platelets, folate-deficiency anaemia, or severe liver disease. Avoid use during pregnancy unless clearly needed, as there may be risks to the unborn baby. Sfeltrin is not for children under 2 months.
