What it is

Lozetrim is a brand of the combination antibiotic sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim, also known as co-trimoxazole. It belongs to the sulfonamide class combined with a folate inhibitor, and it works by stopping the growth of bacteria.

What it's used for

Lozetrim is used to treat urinary tract infections, shigellosis (a type of diarrheal infection), and acute otitis media (middle ear infection) in children. It is also used for other bacterial infections when proven or strongly suspected, and should only be used for susceptible bacteria to reduce drug resistance.

How it's taken

Lozetrim is taken orally as a tablet. Dosage depends on the infection, patient age, and weight, and is typically taken twice daily for a specified number of days. It is not recommended for children under 2 months of age. Always follow your doctor's prescription.

Common side effects

The most common side effects are nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, and allergic skin reactions like rash and hives. Rare but serious side effects include severe allergic reactions (such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome), blood disorders (including agranulocytosis and aplastic anemia), and liver damage. Seek urgent medical help if you experience severe symptoms.

Important cautions

Do not use Lozetrim if you are allergic to sulfonamides or trimethoprim, or if you have a history of drug-induced immune thrombocytopenia from these drugs. It is contraindicated in children under 2 months, patients with marked liver damage, and those with megaloblastic anemia due to folate deficiency.
