Caretrim Tablets (Sulfamethoxazole/Trimethoprim)

What it is

Caretrim is a brand of sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim, a combination antibiotic often called co-trimoxazole. It belongs to the class of drugs known as sulfonamides and is used to treat a variety of bacterial infections.

What it's used for

Caretrim is used to treat bacterial infections such as urinary tract infections, shigellosis (a bacterial infection causing diarrhea), and acute otitis media (ear infection) in children. It should only be used for infections that are proven or strongly suspected to be caused by susceptible bacteria, based on culture and sensitivity tests when available.

How it's taken

Caretrim tablets are taken by mouth. The typical adult dose for urinary tract infections is two tablets (each containing 400 mg/80 mg) every 12 hours for 10 to 14 days, or as directed by a doctor. The dose for children is based on weight and must be determined by a healthcare professional. This medicine is not recommended for infants younger than 2 months of age. Always follow your doctor's prescription.

Common side effects

The most common side effects are stomach upset, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, and skin rash. Rare but serious side effects can occur, including severe allergic reactions (Stevens-Johnson syndrome), blood disorders (anemia, low platelets), and liver damage. If you notice any skin blistering, unusual bleeding, or yellowing of the eyes, seek medical help immediately.

Important cautions

Do not take Caretrim if you are allergic to sulfonamides or trimethoprim, have a history of drug-induced low platelets from these drugs, or have megaloblastic anemia due to folate deficiency. It is also contraindicated in severe liver disease and in infants under 2 months. Pregnant women should use caution as studies suggest a possible increased risk of birth defects. This medicine may interact with other drugs; inform your doctor about all medications you take.
