What it is

Jesstrim Co-Trimoxazole DS is a brand of sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim, a combination of two antibiotics. This medicine works by stopping the growth of bacteria that cause infections.

What it's used for

Jesstrim Co-Trimoxazole DS is used to treat certain bacterial infections, including urinary tract infections, shigellosis (a severe diarrhoeal infection), and acute otitis media (middle ear infection) in children. It should only be used for infections that are proven or strongly suspected to be caused by susceptible bacteria, to help prevent the development of drug-resistant bacteria.

How it's taken

Jesstrim Co-Trimoxazole DS is taken by mouth, typically every 12 hours. For urinary tract infections in adults, the usual course is one tablet every 12 hours for 10 to 14 days. For shigellosis, the same dose is given for 5 days. This medicine is not for children under 2 months of age. Always follow the exact dose and duration prescribed by your doctor or pharmacist.

Common side effects

The most common side effects are stomach upset (nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite) and allergic skin reactions (rash, hives). Rare but serious side effects include severe skin reactions (Stevens-Johnson syndrome), blood disorders (like agranulocytosis and anaemia), and liver damage. Seek medical help immediately if you notice any severe symptoms.

Important cautions

Do not use Jesstrim Co-Trimoxazole DS if you are allergic to sulfonamides or trimethoprim, have a history of drug-induced low platelets, have megaloblastic anaemia due to folate deficiency, or have severe liver disease. It is not for children under 2 months. If you are pregnant, talk to your doctor, as this medicine may increase the risk of birth defects. Always get medical advice before using this medicine.
