Kistrim: A Brand of Sulfamethoxazole + Trimethoprim Suspension

What it is

Kistrim is a brand of sulfamethoxazole + trimethoprim, a combination antibiotic that fights bacteria. Each 5 mL of suspension contains 200 mg of sulfamethoxazole and 40 mg of trimethoprim. It is registered with NAFDAC under number A4-1029.

What it's used for

Kistrim is used to treat bacterial infections such as urinary tract infections, shigellosis (a diarrheal infection), and acute otitis media (middle ear infection) in children. It should be used only for infections that are proven or strongly suspected to be caused by susceptible bacteria, as determined by your doctor.

How it's taken

Kistrim is typically taken every 12 hours. The exact dose and duration depend on the infection, the patient's age, and kidney function. Treatment for urinary tract infections often lasts 10 to 14 days. This medicine is contraindicated in children under 2 months of age. Always follow your doctor's or pharmacist's instructions.

Common side effects

Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, and skin rash or hives. Serious but rare side effects can include severe allergic reactions, blood disorders, and liver damage. Contact your healthcare provider if you experience any unusual symptoms.

Do not use Kistrim if you are allergic to sulfamethoxazole, trimethoprim, or any sulfonamide drug. It should not be used in children under two months old.
