Sulfatrim: A Brand of Sulfamethoxazole + Trimethoprim

What it is

Sulfatrim is a brand of the generic combination sulfamethoxazole + trimethoprim. This combination belongs to a class of medicines called sulfonamide antibiotics. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria that cause infections.

What it's used for

Sulfatrim is used to treat infections that are proven or strongly suspected to be caused by bacteria susceptible to sulfamethoxazole + trimethoprim. These infections include urinary tract infections, shigellosis (a type of diarrhoea), and acute otitis media (middle ear infection) in children. It is also used to prevent certain infections.

How it's taken

Sulfatrim tablets are taken by mouth, typically every 12 hours for 10 to 14 days for urinary tract infections, or for 5 days for shigellosis. The exact dose and duration depend on the infection being treated and the patient's age and weight. Sulfatrim is not recommended for children under 2 months of age. Always follow the dosing instructions given by your doctor or pharmacist.

Common side effects

The most common side effects of Sulfatrim are nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, and skin reactions such as rash or hives. Serious but rare side effects can include severe allergic reactions (Stevens-Johnson syndrome), liver damage, and blood disorders. If you notice any unusual symptoms, contact your doctor immediately.

Important cautions

Do not use Sulfatrim if you are allergic to sulfonamides or trimethoprim, if you have a history of drug-induced immune thrombocytopenia (low platelets) with these medicines, or if you have megaloblastic anaemia due to folate deficiency. It is also not for use in infants under 2 months old. Use during pregnancy may pose risks to the unborn baby; talk to your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. People with severe liver or kidney disease should also avoid this medicine.
