What it is

Unitrim is a brand of sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim (co-trimoxazole), a combination antibiotic that belongs to the class of drugs called sulfonamides plus a dihydrofolate reductase inhibitor. It works by stopping the growth of certain bacteria.

What it's used for

Unitrim is used to treat bacterial infections such as urinary tract infections, shigellosis (a type of diarrheal infection), and acute otitis media (middle ear infection) in children. It is also used for other infections caused by susceptible bacteria. The choice of this medicine should be guided by laboratory tests when available.

How it's taken

Unitrim tablets are taken by mouth, typically every 12 hours. The number of tablets and the duration of treatment depend on the type and severity of the infection, the patient's age, and kidney function. Always follow the dosing instructions given by your doctor or pharmacist. Do not use in children younger than 2 months of age.

Common side effects

The most common side effects include nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, and skin rashes or hives.
