What it is

Damotrim is a brand of Sulfamethoxazole + Trimethoprim, a combination antibiotic that belongs to the sulfonamide and dihydrofolate reductase inhibitor classes. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.

What it's used for

Damotrim is used to treat infections that are proven or strongly suspected to be caused by susceptible bacteria. Common uses include urinary tract infections, shigellosis (a type of diarrheal infection), and acute otitis media (middle ear infection) in children. It should be used only when necessary to reduce the development of drug-resistant bacteria.

How it's taken

Damotrim tablets are taken by mouth. The typical dosage and duration depend on the type and severity of the infection, as well as the patient's age and kidney function. For example, a common adult dose for a urinary tract infection is two tablets taken every 12 hours for 10 to 14 days. For shigellosis, the same daily dose is used for 5 days. Damotrim is not recommended for children younger than 2 months. Always follow your doctor's prescription and do not self-medicate.

Common side effects

The most common side effects include nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, and allergic skin reactions such as rash and hives. Serious but rare side effects can occur, including severe skin reactions like Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, liver damage, and blood disorders. Seek medical help immediately if you notice a severe rash, blistering, fever, or unusual bruising.

Important cautions

Damotrim should not be used in people with a known allergy to sulfonamides or trimethoprim, a history of drug-induced immune thrombocytopenia, or megaloblastic anemia due to folate deficiency. It is also contraindicated in children under 2 months and in patients with severe liver damage. During pregnancy, the drug has been associated with an increased risk of congenital malformations, including neural tube defects and heart defects.
