Paltrin (Sulfamethoxazole + Trimethoprim) Suspension: Overview

What it is

Paltrin is a brand of the combination antibiotic sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim. It belongs to a class of medicines called sulfonamides combined with a folate inhibitor. This suspension form provides 200 mg of sulfamethoxazole and 40 mg of trimethoprim per 5 mL.

What it's used for

Paltrin is used to treat bacterial infections, including urinary tract infections, shigellosis (a type of severe diarrhea), and acute otitis media (middle ear infection) in children. It should only be used for infections that are proven or strongly suspected to be caused by susceptible bacteria, based on your doctor's judgement.

How it's taken

Paltrin suspension is typically taken every 12 hours (twice daily). The dose depends on the infection, your age, and your weight. It is not recommended for children under 2 months of age. Always follow your doctor's prescription exactly. Shake the bottle well before use and measure the dose with the provided cup or syringe.

Common side effects

The most common side effects are nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, and skin rash. Rare but serious reactions include severe allergic reactions, Stevens-Johnson syndrome (a severe skin reaction), blood disorders, and liver damage. Seek medical help immediately if you experience severe symptoms.

Important cautions

Do not use Paltrin if you are allergic to sulfonamides or trimethoprim, or if you have a history of thrombocytopenia (low platelets) with these medicines, or megaloblastic anemia. It is not for children under 2 months. Use during pregnancy may increase the risk of birth defects; speak with your doctor. Caution is needed in severe liver or kidney disease. Drug interactions may occur; consult your pharmacist or doctor.
