Latrim: A Brand of Sulfamethoxazole + Trimethoprim Tablets

What it is

Latrim is a brand of sulfamethoxazole + trimethoprim (co-trimoxazole), a combination antibiotic that fights certain bacterial infections by stopping the growth of bacteria.

What it's used for

This medicine is used to treat urinary tract infections, shigellosis (a severe bacterial diarrhoea), and acute otitis media (middle ear infection) in children. It should only be used for infections proven or strongly suspected to be caused by susceptible bacteria, as directed by a doctor.

How it's taken

Latrim is taken by mouth as a tablet. Dosing depends on the infection, patient age, and weight. Typically, adults take two tablets every 12 hours for 10 to 14 days for urinary tract infections. Children receive a weight-based dose. Always follow your doctor or pharmacist’s instructions exactly.

Common side effects

Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, and skin rash or hives. Rare but serious side effects such as severe skin reactions (Stevens-Johnson syndrome), blood disorders, or liver injury have occurred. Seek medical help if you notice severe symptoms.

Important cautions

Do not use Latrim if you are allergic to sulfonamides or trimethoprim, have a history of drug-induced immune thrombocytopenia, megaloblastic anaemia due to folate deficiency, or severe liver disease. It is not recommended for children under 2 months old. Pregnant women should discuss risks with their doctor before taking this medicine.
