Rotamax is a brand of azithromycin, a macrolide antibacterial drug used to fight mild to moderate infections caused by certain bacteria.

What it's used for

Rotamax is used to treat several types of bacterial infections, including acute worsening of chronic bronchitis, acute sinusitis, community-acquired pneumonia (mild), pharyngitis/tonsillitis (as a second-line option), uncomplicated skin and skin structure infections, and genital ulcer disease. It is only effective against bacterial infections, not viruses like the common cold.

How it's taken

Rotamax is taken by mouth as an oral suspension. The dose and duration depend on the type and severity of the infection. For example, a common adult schedule is 500 mg on the first day followed by 250 mg once daily for four more days. Another schedule is 500 mg once daily for three days. For children, the dose is based on weight. Always follow your doctor's dosing instructions exactly.

Common side effects

The most common side effects of Rotamax include diarrhea (seen in 5 to 14% of patients), nausea (3 to 18%), abdominal pain (3 to 7%), and vomiting (2 to 7%).

Important cautions

Do not use Rotamax if you are allergic to azithromycin, erythromycin, or any macrolide or ketolide drug. Also avoid it if you have ever had cholestatic jaundice or liver problems from a previous azithromycin dose. Serious side effects have been reported, including severe allergic reactions, liver damage (stop the medicine if you develop symptoms of hepatitis), and in newborns, a condition called infantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis. Rotamax may also cause irregular heart rhythm (QT prolongation), severe diarrhea due to Clostridioides difficile, or worsen myasthenia gravis. Seek medical help right away if you experience any severe symptoms.
