Macrosafe 250 mg Tablet: Azithromycin Antibiotic

What it is

Macrosafe is a brand of azithromycin, an antibiotic that belongs to the macrolide class. Macrolides work by stopping the growth of certain bacteria that cause infections.

What it's used for

Macrosafe is indicated for mild to moderate infections caused by susceptible bacteria. These include acute bacterial exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, acute bacterial sinusitis, uncomplicated skin and skin structure infections, community-acquired pneumonia (mild severity), and pharyngitis/tonsillitis (as second-line therapy). It is also used for other infections as determined by a doctor.

How it's taken

Macrosafe is taken by mouth as a tablet. Dosing depends on the type and severity of the infection. For many adult infections, the typical course is 500 mg as a single dose on the first day, followed by 250 mg once daily for the next 4 days. Alternatively, some infections may be treated with 500 mg once daily for 3 days. Always follow the exact dose and duration prescribed by your doctor or pharmacist.

Common side effects

The most common side effects of Macrosafe are diarrhoea (5–14% of patients), nausea (3–18%), abdominal pain (3–7%), and vomiting (2–7%). Other side effects can occur. Seek medical attention if you experience signs of an allergic reaction, liver problems (yellowing of skin or eyes, dark urine), or severe diarrhoea.

Important cautions

Macrosafe should not be used in people who are allergic to azithromycin, erythromycin, or any macrolide or ketolide antibiotic. It is also contraindicated in those who have had cholestatic jaundice or liver problems from previous azithromycin use. Serious but rare side effects include severe allergic reactions, liver injury, QT prolongation (heart rhythm disturbance), and Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhoea. In newborns, there is a risk of infantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis. Tell your doctor about all other medicines you take and any medical conditions you have.
