What it is

Lysomax is a brand name for the generic medicine azithromycin. Azithromycin belongs to a class of drugs called macrolide antibiotics. It works by stopping the growth of certain bacteria that cause infections.

What it's used for

Lysomax (azithromycin) is used to treat mild to moderate infections caused by susceptible bacteria. These include acute bacterial worsening of chronic bronchitis, acute bacterial sinusitis, uncomplicated skin and skin structure infections, community-acquired pneumonia (mild severity), and pharyngitis/tonsillitis (as a second-line treatment). It is not effective against viral infections like the common cold or flu.

How it's taken

Lysomax capsules are taken by mouth, typically once daily for a short course. The exact dose and duration depend on the type and severity of the infection. A doctor or pharmacist will determine the right dose for you. Always follow your healthcare provider’s instructions exactly.

Common side effects

Like all medicines, Lysomax can cause side effects. The most common ones include diarrhoea (5 to 14% of people), nausea (3 to 18%), abdominal pain (3 to 7%), and vomiting (2 to 7%). These are usually mild and go away on their own. If they become severe or do not improve, contact your doctor.

Important cautions

Do not take Lysomax if you are allergic to azithromycin, erythromycin, or any macrolide/ketolide drug, or if you have had jaundice or liver problems from a previous use of azithromycin. Serious allergic reactions (including life-threatening ones) and severe liver injury have been reported – stop taking the medicine and seek medical help if you develop rash, itching, swelling, yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, or unusual tiredness. In newborns (up to 42 days old), azithromycin has been linked to infantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis (a stomach muscle condition that causes forceful vomiting). If your baby vomits repeatedly, call a doctor right away. Azithromycin may also cause Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhoea (a serious bowel infection) and can worsen myasthenia gravis. Always tell your doctor about all your medical conditions and other medicines you take.
