Avrozith (Azithromycin 250 mg Capsule) – What You Need to Know

What it is

Avrozith is a brand of azithromycin. Azithromycin belongs to a class of medicines called macrolide antibiotics. It works by stopping the growth of certain bacteria that cause infections.

What it's used for

Azithromycin is used to treat mild to moderate infections caused by susceptible bacteria. These include: acute bacterial worsening of chronic bronchitis, acute bacterial sinusitis, uncomplicated skin and skin structure infections, community-acquired pneumonia (mild severity), pharyngitis/tonsillitis (as a second-line treatment), and genital ulcer disease. It may also be used for other infections as prescribed by a doctor.

How it's taken

Avrozith is taken by mouth as a capsule. The dose and duration depend on the type and severity of the infection. For example, some infections are treated with a single 500 mg dose on the first day, followed by 250 mg once daily for four more days. Other infections may be treated with 500 mg once daily for three days. Always follow the exact prescription given by your doctor or pharmacist. Do not stop the medicine early unless told to.

Common side effects

The most common side effects reported with azithromycin are diarrhoea (5 to 14% of patients), nausea (3 to 18%), abdominal pain (3 to 7%), and vomiting (2 to 7%). These are usually mild but should be reported to your doctor if they persist or become severe.

Important cautions

Do not take Avrozith if you are allergic to azithromycin, erythromycin, or any other macrolide or ketolide antibiotic. Also do not take it if you have ever had jaundice or liver problems caused by previous use of azithromycin. Serious but rare side effects include severe allergic reactions, liver damage (stop the medicine and see a doctor if you notice yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, or severe stomach pain), heart rhythm changes (QT prolongation), severe diarrhoea caused by Clostridioides difficile infection, and worsening of myasthenia gravis. In newborns (up to 42 days old), azithromycin has been linked to a condition called infantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis (forceful vomiting). Parents and caregivers should contact a doctor if the baby vomits forcefully after feeding.
