What it is

FORSTE is a brand of azithromycin, a macrolide antibiotic that works by stopping the growth of certain bacteria. It is available as 500 mg film-coated tablets.

What it's used for

Azithromycin, the active ingredient in FORSTE, is indicated for mild to moderate infections caused by susceptible bacteria. These include acute bacterial exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, acute bacterial sinusitis, community-acquired pneumonia (mild severity), pharyngitis, tonsillitis, uncomplicated skin and skin structure infections, and genital ulcer disease in adults.

How it's taken

FORSTE tablets are usually taken once daily. The dose and length of treatment depend on the type and severity of the infection. For example, some infections require a single 500 mg dose on day one followed by 250 mg once daily for four more days, while others may be treated with 500 mg once daily for three days. Always follow the exact directions given by your doctor or pharmacist.

Common side effects

Common side effects include diarrhoea (5–14%), nausea (3–18%), abdominal pain (3–7%), and vomiting (2–7). Serious side effects such as severe allergic reactions, liver injury, prolonged heart rhythm (QT prolongation), and Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhoea can occur. Seek immediate medical help if you experience signs of an allergic reaction, jaundice, or irregular heartbeat.

Important cautions

Do not use FORSTE if you are allergic to azithromycin, erythromycin, or any macrolide or ketolide antibiotic, or if you have a history of cholestatic jaundice or liver problems from taking azithromycin. Inform your doctor about all other medicines you take, as azithromycin can interact with certain drugs and increase the risk of heart rhythm problems. If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, discuss with your healthcare provider before use.
