What it is

Nomethromax is a brand of azithromycin, a macrolide antibacterial drug. It stops the growth of bacteria that cause infections.

What it's used for

Nomethromax is used for mild to moderate infections caused by susceptible bacteria. These include acute bacterial exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, acute bacterial sinusitis, community-acquired pneumonia (mild severity), pharyngitis/tonsillitis (second-line therapy), uncomplicated skin and skin structure infections, and genital ulcer disease.

How it's taken

Nomethromax is taken by mouth as tablets. The dose and duration depend on the infection being treated. For many adult infections, a typical regimen is 500 mg as a single dose on day one, followed by 250 mg once daily on days two through five. For some infections, 500 mg once daily for three days may be used. Always follow your doctor's prescription exactly.

Common side effects

The most common side effects are diarrhea (5–14% of patients), nausea (3–18%), abdominal pain (3–7%), and vomiting (2–7%). Serious but rare side effects include allergic reactions, liver injury, and heart rhythm changes. If you experience any concerning symptoms, contact your doctor.

Important cautions

Do not take Nomethromax if you are allergic to azithromycin, erythromycin, or any macrolide/ketolide drug, or if you have had cholestatic jaundice or liver dysfunction from azithromycin before. Stop the medicine and seek medical help if you develop signs of an allergic reaction (rash, swelling, trouble breathing) or liver damage (yellow skin/eyes, dark urine, severe stomach pain). Azithromycin can cause QT prolongation (heart rhythm disturbance) and should be used cautiously in people with heart conditions. In newborns (up to 42 days of life), use has been linked to infantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis (IHPS). Tell your doctor if you have myasthenia gravis, as azithromycin may worsen it.
