Azithrex-500 Capsules: A Brand of Azithromycin for Bacterial Infections

What it is

Azithrex-500 is a brand of azithromycin. Azithromycin belongs to a class of medicines called macrolide antibacterials (antibiotics) that stop the growth of certain bacteria.

What it's used for

Azithrex-500 is used to treat mild to moderate infections caused by susceptible bacteria. These include acute bacterial worsening of chronic bronchitis, acute bacterial sinusitis, uncomplicated skin and skin structure infections, community-acquired pneumonia (mild severity), pharyngitis/tonsillitis (as second-line therapy), and genital ulcer disease. It is only effective against bacterial infections, not viruses like the common cold.

How it's taken

Azithrex-500 capsules are taken by mouth. Typical treatment involves taking one capsule once daily for a few days, but the exact dose and duration depend on the type and severity of the infection. Always follow your doctor’s instructions or a pharmacist’s advice. Do not take more than prescribed.

Common side effects

The most common side effects reported include diarrhoea (5 to 14% of patients), nausea (3 to 18%), abdominal pain (3 to 7%), and vomiting (2 to 7%). These are usually mild and go away on their own.

Important cautions

Do not use Azithrex-500 if you are allergic to azithromycin, erythromycin, any macrolide or ketolide drug, or if you have had liver problems (cholestatic jaundice) from a previous azithromycin treatment. Serious allergic reactions, severe liver damage, and heart rhythm changes (QT prolongation) have been reported. If you develop signs of an allergic reaction (rash, swelling, difficulty breathing) or symptoms of liver problems (yellow skin/eyes, dark urine, severe stomach pain), stop the medicine and seek medical help immediately. Azithromycin can also worsen a condition called myasthenia gravis. In newborns treated with azithromycin, a stomach muscle condition (infantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis) has occurred; parents should contact a doctor if their baby vomits or is irritable after feeding. Diarrhoea during or after treatment could be due to Clostridioides difficile infection; inform your doctor if you have persistent loose stools.
