Azotek (Azithromycin) 500 mg Tablets – Uses, Side Effects, and Cautions

What it is

Azotek is a brand of azithromycin, which belongs to a group of antibiotics called macrolides. Macrolides work by stopping the growth of certain bacteria that cause infections.

What it's used for

Azithromycin is used to treat mild to moderate infections caused by susceptible bacteria. These include community-acquired pneumonia, acute bacterial exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, acute bacterial sinusitis, pharyngitis/tonsillitis, and uncomplicated skin and skin structure infections.

How it's taken

Azotek tablets are taken by mouth. The dose and length of treatment depend on the type and severity of the infection. Your doctor will tell you exactly how much to take and for how many days. Always follow your healthcare provider’s instructions and do not change your dose on your own.

Common side effects

The most common side effects are diarrhoea (5 to 14% of people), nausea (3 to 18%), abdominal pain (3 to 7%), and vomiting (2 to 7%).

Important cautions

Azotek should not be used in people who are allergic to azithromycin, erythromycin, or any other macrolide or ketolide antibiotic. It is also contraindicated in those who have had cholestatic jaundice or liver problems after taking azithromycin before. Serious side effects can include allergic reactions, liver damage, QT prolongation (an abnormal heart rhythm), and severe diarrhoea caused by Clostridioides difficile. Stop taking the medicine and seek medical help if you develop signs of an allergic reaction (rash, swelling, trouble breathing) or symptoms of liver problems (yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, severe stomach pain).
