Azimore (Azithromycin 500 mg Tablet): A Macrolide Antibiotic for Bacterial Infections

What it is

Azimore is a brand of azithromycin, a macrolide antibiotic that fights bacteria. It comes as a 500 mg tablet and is registered with NAFDAC under number C4-1324.

What it's used for

Azimore is used for mild to moderate infections caused by susceptible bacteria. These include acute worsening of chronic bronchitis, acute sinusitis, community-acquired pneumonia (mild cases), pharyngitis and tonsillitis (as a second-choice treatment), and uncomplicated skin infections.

How it's taken

Dosing depends on the infection being treated. For adults, typical courses include: 500 mg once daily for 3 days, or a single 500 mg dose on day 1 followed by 250 mg once daily on days 2 through 5. Always take Azimore exactly as prescribed by your doctor or pharmacist.

Common side effects

The most common side effects reported in studies include diarrhea (5–14% of patients), nausea (3–18%), abdominal pain (3–7%), and vomiting (2–7%). Other side effects may occur; tell your doctor if any side effect bothers you or does not go away.

Important cautions

Do not take Azimore if you are allergic to azithromycin, erythromycin, or any macrolide or ketolide antibiotic. Also avoid it if you have a history of jaundice or liver damage from azithromycin. Serious allergic reactions, liver injury, heart rhythm problems (QT prolongation), and severe diarrhea (C. diff) have been reported. In newborns, azithromycin has been linked to a stomach muscle condition (infantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis). Stop taking Azimore and seek medical help if you develop signs of allergy, yellowing of skin or eyes, dark urine, severe stomach pain, or irregular heartbeat.
