What it's used for

Afithro-500 is used for mild to moderate infections caused by susceptible bacteria, including acute bacterial exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, acute bacterial sinusitis, community-acquired pneumonia, pharyngitis/tonsillitis, uncomplicated skin infections, and genital ulcer disease.

How it's taken

Dosing depends on the infection and should be determined by a doctor. For some conditions, the typical adult dose is 500 mg once daily for 3 days. For others, it may be 500 mg on the first day followed by a lower dose for several days. Always follow your healthcare provider's prescription.

Common side effects

The most common side effects include diarrhea (5-14%), nausea (3-18%), abdominal pain (3-7%), and vomiting (2-7%). Serious side effects such as allergic reactions and liver problems are possible; seek medical attention if symptoms occur.

Important cautions

Do not use if you are allergic to azithromycin, erythromycin, or any macrolide/ketolide antibiotic, or if you have had liver problems from azithromycin before. Serious reactions include severe allergic reactions, liver damage (hepatitis), heart rhythm changes (QT prolongation), severe diarrhea (C. difficile infection), and worsening of myasthenia gravis. In newborns, azithromycin may cause a condition called infantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis. Tell your doctor about all other medicines you take.
