What it is

Axerem is a brand of azithromycin, which belongs to a class of medicines called macrolide antibiotics. It works by stopping the growth of certain bacteria that cause infections.

What it's used for

Axerem (azithromycin) is used for mild to moderate infections caused by susceptible bacteria. These include acute bacterial worsening of chronic bronchitis, acute bacterial sinusitis, community-acquired pneumonia (mild severity), pharyngitis/tonsillitis (as a second-line treatment), and uncomplicated skin and skin structure infections.

How it's taken

Axerem is available as a suspension (liquid) with a strength of 200 mg per 5 mL. It is typically taken once daily, with or without food, for a short course lasting 3 to 5 days depending on the infection. Always shake the bottle well before use and use the measuring device provided. Dosing should be determined by a doctor or pharmacist based on the specific infection and the patient's age and weight.

Common side effects

The most common side effects of Axerem include diarrhea (5 to 14% of patients), nausea (3 to 18%), abdominal pain (3 to 7%), and vomiting (2 to 7%). These effects are usually mild to moderate.

Important cautions

Do not use Axerem if you are allergic to azithromycin, erythromycin, or any other macrolide or ketolide antibiotic. It is also contraindicated if you have a history of jaundice or liver problems linked to previous azithromycin use. Serious side effects can occur, including severe allergic reactions, liver damage, and irregular heart rhythms (QT prolongation). Stop taking the medicine and seek medical help if you experience signs of an allergic reaction, yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, or rapid heartbeat. In newborns (up to 42 days old), azithromycin has been associated with a condition called infantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis (IHPS) causing forceful vomiting; parents should contact a doctor if this occurs.
