What You Need to Know About Azigraf-500 (Azithromycin 500 mg Tablets)

What it is

Azigraf-500 is a brand of azithromycin, a macrolide antibiotic. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria that cause infections.

What it's used for

It is used to treat mild to moderate infections caused by susceptible bacteria. These include acute bacterial exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, acute bacterial sinusitis, community-acquired pneumonia (mild severity), pharyngitis/tonsillitis (as a second-line therapy), uncomplicated skin and skin structure infections, and genital ulcer disease.

How it's taken

For adults, the typical dose depends on the infection. It may be taken as 500 mg once daily for 3 days, or as a single 500 mg dose on day 1 followed by 250 mg once daily on days 2 through 5. Always follow your doctor's prescription and do not adjust the dose without medical advice.

Common side effects

The most common side effects are diarrhea (5 to 14% of patients), nausea (3 to 18%), abdominal pain (3 to 7%), and vomiting (2 to 7%). Serious side effects are possible and require immediate medical attention.

Important cautions

Do not take Azigraf-500 if you are allergic to azithromycin, erythromycin, or any other macrolide or ketolide drug. Also avoid it if you have ever had liver problems (cholestatic jaundice or hepatic dysfunction) from taking azithromycin before. Stop the medicine and seek help right away if you experience signs of an allergic reaction (rash, swelling, trouble breathing) or liver injury (yellowing of skin or eyes, dark urine, severe stomach pain). Azithromycin can rarely cause severe diarrhea due to C. difficile infection, changes in heart rhythm (QT prolongation), and in newborns, a condition called infantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis (IHPS). If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, talk to your doctor before use.
