Azglo (Azithromycin 500 mg Tablets) - Informational Overview

What it is

Azglo is a brand of azithromycin, a macrolide antibiotic that kills or stops the growth of certain bacteria. It comes as 500 mg tablets and is registered with NAFDAC under number B4-0387.

What it's used for

Azglo is used to treat mild to moderate bacterial infections including acute worsening of chronic bronchitis, acute sinusitis, community-acquired pneumonia (mild cases), pharyngitis/tonsillitis (second-line therapy), and uncomplicated skin infections. It works only against bacteria, not viruses.

How it's taken

Azglo tablets are typically taken once daily, with or without food. The dose and duration depend on the type and severity of the infection. Your doctor will prescribe the right course for you. Always follow your healthcare provider’s instructions exactly; do not stop early or change the dose on your own.

Common side effects

The most common side effects of azithromycin are diarrhoea, nausea, abdominal pain, and vomiting. These occur in about 5 to 18% of people. If any side effect becomes severe or does not go away, tell your doctor or pharmacist.

Important cautions

Do not take Azglo if you are allergic to azithromycin, erythromycin, or any other macrolide or ketolide antibiotic, or if you have previously had jaundice or liver injury from azithromycin. Serious side effects can occur, including severe allergic reactions, liver damage, a heart rhythm problem called QT prolongation, and severe diarrhoea due to C. difficile infection. If you experience symptoms like rash, itching, yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, or fast/irregular heartbeat, stop the medicine and seek medical help immediately. Azithromycin may also worsen myasthenia gravis. Tell your doctor about all your medical conditions and medicines before starting Azglo.
