Dealmentin: Amoxicillin + Clavulanic Acid Suspension

What it is

Dealmentin is a combination antibiotic that contains amoxicillin (a penicillin-type drug) and clavulanic acid (a beta-lactamase inhibitor). The clavulanic acid helps amoxicillin work against bacteria that would otherwise destroy it. This medicine belongs to the class of penicillins combined with beta-lactamase inhibitors.

What it's used for

Dealmentin is used to treat infections caused by certain bacteria that produce beta-lactamase. These include lower respiratory tract infections (like bronchitis), acute bacterial otitis media (middle ear infection), sinusitis, and skin and skin structure infections. The specific bacteria it targets include Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis, Staphylococcus aureus, and Escherichia coli.

How it's taken

Dealmentin is taken by mouth as a suspension. The dose depends on the patient's age, weight, and the severity of the infection. For adults and children weighing more than 40 kg, the typical dose is 500 mg to 875 mg every 12 hours, or 250 mg to 500 mg every 8 hours, based on the amoxicillin part. For children aged 12 weeks and older, the typical dose is 25 to 45 mg per kg of body weight per day, divided every 12 hours, or 20 to 40 mg per kg per day divided every 8 hours. For newborns and infants under 12 weeks, the typical dose is 30 mg per kg per day divided every 12 hours. Always follow the doctor's instructions exactly.

Common side effects

The most common side effects of Dealmentin include diarrhea or loose stools (affecting about 9% of people), nausea (3%), skin rashes and hives (3%), vomiting (1%), and vaginal yeast infection (1%). Serious side effects can include severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis), severe skin reactions (like Stevens-Johnson syndrome), liver problems (including jaundice), and diarrhea caused by Clostridioides difficile bacteria. If you experience signs of an allergic reaction, severe rash, yellowing of skin or eyes, or persistent diarrhea, seek medical help right away.

Important cautions

Do not take Dealmentin if you have ever had a serious allergic reaction to amoxicillin, clavulanic acid, or other beta-lactam antibiotics such as penicillins or cephalosporins. Also avoid it if you have had liver problems (including cholestatic jaundice) caused by amoxicillin and clavulanate. Stop the medicine and tell your doctor if you develop any signs of an allergic reaction, severe skin rash, liver inflammation (like abdominal pain, dark urine, or yellow eyes), or severe diarrhea. Use with caution if you have mononucleosis, as it often causes a rash. This medicine is not a cure for viral infections.
