Augulab: A Brand of Amoxicillin and Clavulanic Acid

What it is

Augulab is a brand of amoxicillin and clavulanic acid. This is a combination antibiotic that contains a penicillin-type medicine (amoxicillin) and a beta-lactamase inhibitor (clavulanic acid). The clavulanic acid helps the amoxicillin work against certain bacteria that would otherwise break it down. It belongs to a class of medicines called penicillins with beta-lactamase inhibitors.

What it's used for

Augulab is used to treat infections caused by susceptible bacteria. According to its approved uses, it is prescribed for lower respiratory tract infections (such as bronchitis and pneumonia), acute bacterial otitis media (middle ear infection), sinusitis (sinus infection), and skin and skin structure infections. These infections must be due to bacteria that produce beta-lactamase, which would normally make them resistant to amoxicillin alone.

How it's taken

Augulab tablets are taken by mouth. Dosing depends on the type and severity of the infection as well as the patient's age and weight. For adults and children weighing more than 40 kg, typical doses are either 500 mg or 875 mg every 12 hours, or 250 mg or 500 mg every 8 hours (based on the amoxicillin part). For children 12 weeks and older, the dose is calculated by weight and given every 12 or 8 hours. Infants under 12 weeks receive a fixed daily dose divided every 12 hours. Always follow your doctor or pharmacist's instructions exactly. Do not change your dose or stop early without consulting them.

Common side effects

The most common side effects reported in studies include diarrhoea or loose stools (about 9% of people), nausea (3%), skin rash or hives (3%), vomiting (1%), and vaginal inflammation or vaginitis (1%). If any side effect bothers you or does not go away, speak to your healthcare provider.

Important cautions

Do not take Augulab if you have had a serious allergic reaction (such as anaphylaxis or Stevens-Johnson syndrome) to any penicillin or cephalosporin antibiotic, or to clavulanate. It is also contraindicated if you have ever had jaundice or liver problems caused by amoxicillin and clavulanic acid. Stop taking Augulab and get medical help right away if you develop signs of an allergic reaction (rash, itching, swelling, trouble breathing). Other serious warnings include severe skin reactions (stop if rash worsens), liver problems (stop if you have yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, or abdominal pain), and diarrhoea caused by Clostridioides difficile bacteria (tell your doctor if you get persistent diarrhoea). Patients with mononucleosis (glandular fever) should not take amoxicillin-based medicines because they often develop a rash.
