What it is

Clavumetin 228.5 for Oral is a brand of amoxicillin and clavulanic acid, a combination antibiotic. Amoxicillin belongs to the penicillin group of antibiotics. Clavulanic acid stops bacteria from producing an enzyme that would otherwise destroy amoxicillin, making the combination effective against infections caused by bacteria that are resistant to amoxicillin alone.

What it's used for

This medicine is used to treat infections caused by susceptible bacteria, including: lower respiratory tract infections (such as pneumonia and bronchitis), acute middle ear infections (otitis media), sinus infections, and skin and skin structure infections. These infections are specifically caused by bacteria that produce beta-lactamase, an enzyme that can make other antibiotics ineffective.

How it's taken

Clavumetin 228.5 for Oral is taken by mouth as a suspension after the powder is mixed with water according to the instructions on the bottle. The dose depends on the patient's age, weight, and the type of infection. For adults and children weighing more than 40 kg, typical dosing is every 12 hours or every 8 hours. For children aged 12 weeks and older, the dose is based on body weight and given every 12 or 8 hours. Infants under 12 weeks usually take a weight-based dose every 12 hours. Always follow the dose prescribed by your doctor or the instructions given by your pharmacist. Shake the suspension well before each use.

Common side effects

The most frequently reported side effects include diarrhoea or loose stools (about 9% of people), nausea (3%), skin rashes and hives (3%), vomiting (1%), and vaginitis (1%). Serious side effects are rare but can include severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis), severe skin reactions, liver problems, and diarrhoea caused by Clostridioides difficile. If you notice a severe rash, difficulty breathing, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or persistent diarrhoea, stop taking the medicine and seek medical help immediately.

Important cautions

Do not take Clavumetin 228.5 if you have had a serious allergic reaction (such as anaphylaxis or Stevens-Johnson syndrome) to any penicillin, cephalosporin, or other beta-lactam antibiotic. It is also contraindicated if you have ever developed jaundice or liver problems while taking amoxicillin/clavulanate. Tell your doctor if you have kidney disease, are on a low-sodium diet, or have mononucleosis (glandular fever), as the medicine may cause a widespread rash. Stop the medicine and contact your doctor if you develop signs of an allergic reaction, severe skin rash, liver problems (e.g., dark urine, jaundice), or persistent diarrhoea.
