Augclamox: A Brand of Amoxicillin + Clavulanic Acid for Bacterial Infections

What it is

Augclamox is a brand of the combination medicine amoxicillin and clavulanic acid. It belongs to a class of drugs called penicillin antibiotics combined with a beta-lactamase inhibitor. The clavulanic acid helps stop certain bacteria from breaking down the amoxicillin, making the antibiotic more effective against infections.

What it's used for

Augclamox is indicated for treating infections caused by susceptible bacteria in adults and children. These include lower respiratory tract infections, acute bacterial otitis media (middle ear infection), sinusitis, and skin and skin structure infections. It works against bacteria that produce beta-lactamase, such as Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis, Staphylococcus aureus, and Escherichia coli.

How it's taken

The strength is 500 mg of amoxicillin and 125 mg of clavulanic acid per tablet. Dosing depends on age, weight, and the infection being treated. For adults and children weighing more than 40 kg, the typical dose is often 500 mg or 875 mg every 12 hours, or 250 mg or 500 mg every 8 hours, based on the amoxicillin part. For children aged 12 weeks and older, the dose is usually 25–45 mg/kg/day divided every 12 hours or 20–40 mg/kg/day divided every 8 hours, up to the adult dose. Neonates and infants under 12 weeks typically receive 30 mg/kg/day divided every 12 hours. Always follow your doctor’s prescription exactly, and consult a pharmacist if you have questions.

Common side effects

The most frequently reported side effects include diarrhoea or loose stools (9%), nausea (3%), skin rashes and hives (3%), vomiting (1%), and vaginitis (1%). These are typically mild but should be reported to your healthcare provider if they become bothersome or persistent.

Important cautions

Augclamox should not be used in patients with a history of serious hypersensitivity reactions (such as anaphylaxis or Stevens-Johnson syndrome) to any penicillin or other beta-lactam antibiotics like cephalosporins. It is also contraindicated in those who have had cholestatic jaundice or liver problems related to amoxicillin/clavulanate. Discontinue use and seek immediate medical attention if signs of a serious allergic reaction, severe skin reaction, or liver problems (such as yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, or abdominal pain) occur. Patients with mononucleosis are at higher risk of developing a rash. Inform your doctor about all medical conditions and medicines you take.
