What it is

Clavicin 457 for Oral is a brand of amoxicillin and clavulanic acid, a combination antibiotic. Amoxicillin is a penicillin-type antibiotic, and clavulanic acid helps prevent bacteria from breaking down amoxicillin, making the medicine more effective against certain resistant bacteria.

What it's used for

Clavicin 457 for Oral is used to treat infections caused by susceptible bacteria. These include lower respiratory tract infections, acute bacterial otitis media (middle ear infection), sinusitis, and skin and skin structure infections. It works against bacteria that produce beta-lactamase enzymes.

How it's taken

Clavicin 457 for Oral is a powder that must be mixed with water to form a suspension before use. The dose is based on the amoxicillin component and depends on the patient's weight and infection severity. For adults and children weighing more than 40 kg, typical doses are 500 or 875 mg every 12 hours, or 250 or 500 mg every 8 hours. For children aged 12 weeks and older, the dose is 25 to 45 mg per kg per day divided every 12 hours, or 20 to 40 mg per kg per day divided every 8 hours. For infants under 12 weeks, the dose is 30 mg per kg per day divided every 12 hours. Always follow your doctor's instructions exactly.

Common side effects

The most common side effects include diarrhoea or loose stools (reported in 9% of patients), nausea (3%), skin rash or hives (3%), vomiting (1%), and vaginal infection (1%). Serious side effects such as severe allergic reactions, severe skin reactions, liver problems, and diarrhoea caused by Clostridioides difficile can occur and require immediate medical attention.

Important cautions

Do not use Clavicin 457 if you have a history of serious allergic reaction to amoxicillin, clavulanate, or other beta-lactam antibiotics (like penicillins or cephalosporins), or if you have had liver problems or jaundice with this medicine before. If you develop a rash, stop taking the medicine and see a doctor. Patients with mononucleosis (glandular fever) are at higher risk of rash. Always inform your doctor of your full medical history.
