Amplify Film Coated: A Brand of Amoxicillin and Clavulanic Acid

What it is

Amplify Film Coated is a combination antibiotic. It contains amoxicillin, a penicillin-type antibiotic, and clavulanic acid, a substance that stops bacteria from breaking down the amoxicillin. This makes the medicine effective against infections that are resistant to amoxicillin alone.

What it's used for

It is used to treat infections in adults and children caused by susceptible bacteria. These include lower respiratory tract infections, acute bacterial otitis media (middle ear infection), sinusitis, and skin and skin structure infections. The exact infections treated are those caused by bacteria that produce beta-lactamase, an enzyme that would otherwise make them resistant to amoxicillin.

How it's taken

Amplify Film Coated is taken by mouth as a caplet. Dosing depends on body weight, age, and the type of infection. For adults weighing more than 40 kg, the typical dose based on the amoxicillin part is 875 mg every 12 hours. For children, the dose is based on their weight and is usually given every 12 hours. Always follow the prescription given by your doctor or pharmacist. Do not change your dose without medical advice.

Common side effects

The most frequently reported side effects include diarrhoea or loose stools (in about 9% of users), nausea (3%), skin rashes and hives (3%), vomiting (1%), and vaginitis (1%). These are common but should be reported to your healthcare provider if they become severe or do not go away.

Important cautions

This medicine should not be used by anyone who has had a serious allergic reaction (such as anaphylaxis or Stevens-Johnson syndrome) to amoxicillin, clavulanate, or other beta-lactam antibiotics (like penicillins or cephalosporins). It is also contraindicated in people who have had liver problems (cholestatic jaundice or liver dysfunction) linked to amoxicillin and clavulanate. If you develop signs of a serious allergic reaction, severe skin rash, or yellowing of the skin and eyes, stop the medicine and seek medical help immediately. In people with infectious mononucleosis (glandular fever), a widespread rash is more likely. Diarrhoea that occurs during treatment may be due to a gut infection called Clostridioides difficile; tell your doctor if diarrhoea persists.
